2018 NCSU + teddslist Small Business Internship Fair Success Story with Anderson Painting

On March 23, 2018 the Poole College of Management Career Center, in partnership with teddslist.comhosted the first annual 2018 Small Business Internship Fair in Nelson Hall on the NC State campus.

This was a great event to recruit talented and ambitious NC State business students for paid summer internships and project work for local businesses.

We had 16 small businesses or branch offices from the Triangle register to attend and 62 students came out that afternoon to talk with the company representatives about summer internships and project work.

The list included:

  1. American Red Cross – redcross.org
  2. Anderson Painting & Power Washing Corp – andersonpaintingnc.com
  3. Belmonte Auto Imports – belmonteauto.com
  4. Carmen Ritz – State Farm Insurance Agent – carmenritz.com
  5. Hire Scene – hirescene.com
  6. i2m LLC – i-2-m.com
  7. Lithios Apps – lithiosapps.com
  8. Merchants Sales Company – merchantssales.com
  9. Mosquito Authority – mosquito-authority.com
  10. My Hot Lunchbox – myhotlunchbox.com
  11. Size Stream – sizestream.com
  12. Southeast Montessori Collective – southeastmontessoricollective.org
  13. Southern National Motorsports Park – snmpark.com
  14. teddslist.com – teddslist.com
  15. Venture Back Office – venturebackoffice.com
  16. WaveTherm – wavetherm.com

Anderson Painting is one of the locally-owned independent North Carolina businesses listed on teddslist.com who attended last year’s 2018 Small Business Internship Fair at NC State University. We asked them to share their experience and success of attending and here is what they said,

teddslist: Was it worth it to attend the internship fair for local businesses?

Megan Anderson, co-owner,

There are not many opportunities for a local, independently owned business like Anderson Painting to get in front of strong, collegiate talent. As business owners, Nate [Anderson] and I jumped at the opportunity to be involved in a small business fair where we could connect with students without being over shadowed by large corporations with big budgets and their own recruiters.

I love that you are showing university students that there are employment opportunities in the small, local business sector. Every candidate that we interviewed was well spoken and professional. We ultimately hired Holly [Brantley], initially as an intern, and now as head of our Marketing department.

As a graduate of the NCSU Business school, Holly is knowledgeable, responsible, and motivated. We couldn’t be happier with our entire experience with the small business intern fair, from start to finish. Thank you for supporting small, local businesses!”

teddslist: The fair was good for local businesses, what about the students?

Holly Brantley, NCSU intern/full time employee,

I was very excited about the opportunity to attend the Small Business Career Fair during the spring semester of my senior year at NC State. As I was preparing for graduation I had hoped that the fair would allow me to make connections with local companies that would ultimately lead to a full time position. During my time at NC State, I had determined that a career in the corporate world was not the right fit for me. Instead, I wanted to work for a small business where I thought I would really be able to recognize the impact of my contributions. For this reason, I was glad that NC State was providing an event specifically for students to meet with locally owned and operated companies. Prior to the fair I did some research on the companies that would be attending. One company in particular stood out to me and their needs matched well with what I had to offer. That company was Anderson Painting.

During the fair I spoke with Anderson’s Operation Manager and passed along my resume for further review. From there, one of the owner’s of the company reached out to schedule an interview. After the interview process was complete I was offered a full time marketing internship with the company. During the internship I learned a great deal about the marketing initiatives that Anderson had implemented thus far as well as their goals and plans for moving forward. The internship lasted for about 4 months and then rolled into a full time marketing manager position.

Now, I have been with Anderson Painting for almost a full year and I have really enjoyed working with a company where I have the chance to learn something new everyday. Working with a small business such as Anderson has given me the opportunity to learn what entrepreneurship is all about. My main responsibilities include researching and planning for new marketing efforts as well as monitoring ROI for our current initiatives. This year, the Anderson team has some pretty ambitious goals and I look forward to playing an important role in helping the company reach those targets.”

About Anderson Painting

Anderson Painting is a licensed and insured professional painting company based in Raleigh offering exterior and interior painting, pressure washing, along with siding repair, wood work, deck staining, and remodeling for residential and commercial properties for the Greater Triangle area.

Nate Anderson learned how to paint as a teenager growing up in Portland, Oregon. Every summer he would work with his youth pastor painting houses. In college he used those acquired skills to start a small summer paint business. Upon graduation, he took a high school teaching job in North Carolina & on a small hunch that he may use his paint equipment again, he threw his paint sprayer in his trailer, and headed East.

Flash forward a few years later and Nate found himself missing the challenges and excitement that come with being an entrepreneur. In the midst of a growing family, he and his wife Megan took a huge leap of faith; they quit their jobs, and started Anderson Painting the summer of 2006. Through hard work, attention to detail, and a commitment to excellent customer service, Anderson Painting grew into the company it is today.

“Our commitment is to provide our customers with the highest level of customer satisfaction possible. We accomplish this by:

  • Conducting all business in an honest, friendly, and courteous manner
  • Valuing all customer concerns and requests
  • Delivering professional grade services, focused on precision, detail, and thoroughness
  • Maintaining continuous communication with the customer with regard to job progress
  • Completing a final walk through and evaluation with the customer upon completion of the job”

Google could be flagging your website ‘Not secure.’ How to ‘Secure’ it with an SSL certificate–and why it’s important

Google gives web users warnings of websites that are not secured with what is called an SSL Certificate, or Secure Socket Layer.  In short, this is why some websites begin with https (secure) and http (not secure).  Websites with the SSL give visitors assurance that the personal information that they input (such as mailing list forms and surveys as well as credit card numbers and mailing addresses) will be kept secure from breaches.  Google also ranks the websites with https higher than those that aren’t secured.  The image below illustrates what unsecure websites will display to visitors:

Eventual treatment of all HTTP pages in Chrome

Eventual treatment of all HTTP pages in Chrome

The fix is easy, and there are ancillary benefits as well.  To achieve the https status, add an SSL Certificate to your website (see Buying and Installing an SSL below).  When you do, the following benefits will be gained:

Five SSL Certificate benefits:

  • Encryption: Help protect customer data submitted on your website.
  • Protection: Guard against phishing and hacking attacks.
  • Increase Ranking: Higher organic rankings for search results in search engines.
  • Verification: Confirmation that you are the true owner of the website.
  • Build: Add trust with potential and current customers

(From the Google Security Blog) – Google is marking all HTTP sites as “not secure”, but all you have to do is buy and set up a SSL Certificate, which changes your domain from an unsecured HTTP to a secured HTTPS and then Google will update and mark your website with the trusted and rapidly growing green lock and ‘secure’ sign in their Chrome web browser ominbox right before your domain name.

Buying and installing an SSL.

Keep in mind:

  • $65.00 to $350.00+ depending on security level.
  • Certificates last one to two years and must be renewed.
  • There are many options online to buy SSL Certificates–ask your web developer or a teddslist professional to get you started, or begin at teddslist.domains/ssl

Business Spotlight: Melody Cubillos of Cubillos, Inc.

Q + A with Cubillos owner Melody Cubillos

What do you offer at Cubillos?  The Cubillos team offers services that help a business’s brand. We create designs from logos, brochures, social media posts, Ads and much more. In addition, we also help businesses with their social media. This helps to maintain their brand’s presence and engage with their consumers while building a relationship with them. We are also partnered with some other great local businesses to better assist our clients with all their printing and signage needs. This way, no matter what kind of marketing items and campaigns we help with – our clients are always covered.

How long have you been in business?  Since summer, 2016.

Where are you located, and whom do you serve?  We are based in Holly Springs, but we work remotely. We are able to help clients all over the country!

What do you most enjoy about your business?  Where to start? I love being creative! I first decided to start the business because I really wanted to connect with small business owners who were ready to grow their business. Whether we are helping to design a logo, brainstorm marketing campaigns, or even create content for social media – making it custom to each client is the most exciting part!

What is something you educate your clients about?  We help educate clients on why it’s so important to have a strong brand. We explain why it matters, and how it can be done. Rather than using clipart images, and Canva templates, we show our clients how custom designs that reflect their brand will help their audience remember their business better. The more consistent your brand is, the more credible you become; therefore, the more trust you will gain from your audience.

What local businesses do you love?  The Kitchen Archive of Raleigh and Durham and Bombshell Brewery in Holly Springs.

Google’s Now Marking Your HTTP Website ‘Not Secure’. How To ‘Secure’ It, Speed Up Loading Time And Improve SEO With a SSL Certificate.

Red Beware Not Secure Triangle Shown In Chrome

Red Beware Not Secure Triangle Will Be Shown In Chrome On HTTP Websites

(Google Security Blog) – Google is marking all HTTP sites as “not secure”, but all you have to do is get and set up a SSL Certificate, which changes your domain from an unsecured HTTP to a secured HTTPS and then Google will update and mark your website with the trusted and rapidly growing green lock and ‘Secure‘ sign in their Chrome web browser ominbox right before your domain name.

HTTP websites get ‘Not Secure‘ displayed in the ominbox.

This has been a long time coming according to Google’s blog post:

For the past several years, we’ve moved toward a more secure web by strongly advocating that sites adopt HTTPS encryption. And within the last year, we’ve also helped users understand that HTTP sites are not secure by gradually marking a larger subset of HTTP pages as “not secure”. Beginning in July 2018 with the release of Chrome 68, Chrome will mark all HTTP sites as “not secure”“.

7 SSL Certificate Benefits:

  • Encrypt:  SSL help protect customer data submitted on your website.
  • Protect:  Guard against phishing and hacking attacks with SSL.
  • Improve: Higher organic rankings for SSL websites in search engines.
  • Verify: Conformation that you’re the true owner of the website.
  • Build: SSL add trust with potential and current customers
  • Increase:  Webpage load times can speed up with SSL certificates.
  • Comply:  SSL is a key component in PCI compliance and e-commerce.
  •

  • SSL certificates cost $65.00 to $350.00+ depending on security.
  • SSL certificate last are for one to two years and  have to be renewed.

SSL certificates ‘Secure‘ and improve website SEO.

Google uses HTTPS as a ranking signal to help place your ‘secure’ website higher in organic search results when ranking your website against other websites who don’t have an SSL certificate thereby helping your search engine optimization (SEO).

SEO and Internet Marking companies have said for many years now how valuable SSL certificates are for SEO as quoted from Noah Boswell a certified Google Adwords Partner, SEO expert and CEO of a Raleigh NC based SEO and Internet Marketing Company  Look to the Right, LLC.

“SEO is an constant process of optimizing your website, blogs, social media and many other aspects of internet marketing to help your website move up in search result rankings for potential visitors and customer who are searching for your products or services. We help our clients get to the top of Google and having an SSL certificate on their website is one of those ways we do it.”

Google Search Results Are HTTPS Trend Forecast

Google Search Results Are HTTPS Trend Forecast

In fact, April 2017 MOZ.com reported “Half of Page-1 Google Results Are Now HTTPS ” and as far back as August 2014 Searchengineland.com  published the article ” Google Starts Giving A Ranking Boost To Secure HTTPS/SSL Sites ” which went on to say that “this gives websites a small ranking benefit”.

What’s an SSL certificate and how to install it?

An SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) certificate is a digital certificate that authenticates the identity of a website and encrypts information sent to the server using SSL technology that help provide protection online for both the business and consumer.

Installing SSL certificates can vary and will be done with the company you bought it from and with some managed WordPress websites, SSL certificates are automatically installed for you. The best bet is to  reach out to the company or individual who manganese your website and have them help you with the process.

teddslist.com is an online community marketplace connecting locally-owned independent businesses and consumers by listing their website and offering other online marketing, products, services including  domains, hosting, SSL certificates, e-commerce and digital marketing as well as custom WordPress websites and DYI website builder options.

How to choose a Headshot Photographer

How to choose a headshot photographer?  Alexis Shoemaker of Sly Fox Marketing and Promotion explains how to select a professional who will strategically help you build your brand.

“As a professional marketer, I often have to remind my clients that there is a distinct difference between a photographer and a branding specialist,” Shoemaker says.  “A branding specialist understands the high standards that branding photography must meet, so that images can be used on one’s website, printed marketing materials and various social media platforms.”

Shoemaker continues that business photographers create “images that are more than just pictures. They represent your brand.  For instance, a knowledgeable specialist may shoot a hair stylist in their working environment. She or he knows how to style and position the professional so the industry is conveyed as well.”
Perhaps most importantly, Shoemaker explains, brand specialists “communicate with your website and graphic designers, your marketers and your networks,” and that they often “limit other types of photography they offer. For example, Wanda Clayton of Timeless Photography does not offer wedding or family photography as often as other photographers may. Wanda is truly a specialist, not a general photographer. “
Search business photographers, among other services, in the Business Services category.
